Like the NetGear 410, works like a dream with PC Card Wizard from BeBits and the included ne2000 driver.

This worked almost out of the box, just had to edit the pcmcia configuration file (the same thing PC card wizard does for you) and away it goes. You can get these new for around $30, so it's not such a bad deal :) -Jon

I purchased this PCMCIA NIC based on the recommendations here at Frizbe.net. It cost me ~$40 by Mail Order (not including shipping). I plugged it in, ran the PC-Card wizard, and was on the network. For those that do not know, it does not use a dongle, but instead has a built-out edge to plug the terminator into. Highly recommended for a quick and easy PCMCIA NIC solution. Because it is NE2000 compatable, it also works with just about every other OS as well.

Plugged it in, ran the PC Card Wizard on BeBits, and it's worked flawlessly ever since.

I have the dongle version of this card. I tried everything I could think of (PC Card Wizard, editing /boot/home/config/settings/kernel/drivers/pcmcia manually, reducing version number info, etc) and I couldn't get this card to work under R5.0.3 on a Compaq Presario 1200. The card worked under Win98, so the hardware isn't damaged, but I don't get steady link lights. Instead, they just flash at an even rate. I tried two other NICs - a D-Link DFE-680TXD and a LinkSys NP100 - and neither of them worked. It could be the PCMCIA chipset that isn't working quite right, but it responds to crdctrl. I'm stuck. Suggestions are welcome. In the meantime, I'll research writing drivers.

I couldn't get this to work either with a Dell Inspiron 7500/5.0.3, or Compaq Presario 1245 Bone. The operating system refused to bind the driver to the "ne2000_cs". Back to dongles (and the EC2T) for me...

Regardless of what others have said, the Netgear FA411 works perfectly. I am running mine on a Compaq Presario 1277 laptop and it was a breeze to install. Here's what you do:

  1. Download PC Card Wizard from BeBits.com (http://www.bebits.com/app/601). I am using version 1.12 which seems to be the final version that will be released since Takayuki has stopped developing it.
  2. Make sure you have some way of transferring it to your laptop (i.e. floppy, burned CD, etc.). Seems like a no-brainer I know . . . but you'd be surprised.
  3. Once on your laptop, unzip the package and run the install.sh file. Follow the prompts and answer the questions. Not much work here - PC Card Wizard detects all the settings and suggests configurations for you.

DONE! Now you should be able to go online just fine!

ATRAPOSE: You could be right about the PCMCIA being non-cooperative. However, to my knowledge, there is no dongle version of this card . . . and I haven't seen anything that says either the D-Link or Linksys is compatible. So it could very well be that all of those cards just aren't going to work regardless of the chipset. What laptop were you running these on? I'd like to help if I can.

ELLISON: Is the Dell Inspiron 7500 fully compatible with BeOS? If it is, that'd be great since I might be able to get one for cheap! As for the Compaq, I'm pretty sure PC Card Wizard works better with the old net server rather than BONE. Let me know if I can help.

As for everyone else considering the FA411, these sell on eBay for anywhere between US$10.00 to US$25.00 each now . . . http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&SortProperty=MetaEndSort&ht=1&query=fa411.

If you can't find any there, I have an extra one (brand new in retail box) that I would let go of for US$20.00 plus whatever shipping is to your destination. Just leave a message for me here and I'll drop in from time to time.
