BeShare

BeShare is an ingenious chat client and file-sharing utility created by Jeremy Friesner, who was kind enough to allow us to include it in our distribution. It lets you connect to a variety of active chatrooms where BeOS users congregate, and gives us the ability to chat live with you, as well as file-share when we need to assist you with updated files or log design.

We won't try and provide full documentation for BeShare here, but will cover a few basics.

•   After launching BeShare, give yourself a nickname by typing it into the text box at the top of the BeShare window. Be sure to hit Enter after typing in the nickname.
  
•   Select a room from the Server dropdown combo box at the top of the BeShare window. We frequently use beshare.neonplasma.com.
  
•   If that room is already selected, you can connect by choosing "Connect" from the File pulldown menu at the top of the BeShare window.
  
•   Once connected and in, you can communicate with those in the room (their nicknames are listed in a panel on the right) by typing their nickname followed by your message into the text box at the bottom of the BeShare window and hitting Enter.
  
•   To view the files available to download from the other BeSharers, double-click their nickname in the panel on the right. A list of their shared files will appear in a panel just above the chat window.
  
•   To download files from others, select them from the panel above the chat window and click the download button.
  
•   To view and access the files you've downloaded, do CTRL-D to open the download folder.
  
•   To add files you want to share, do CTRL-S to open the shared folder.
  
•   If you are broadcasting over the air, be certain that BeShare's "sounds" are turned off. This is already done in the "Station-in-a-Box" systems. If you installed BeShare yourself, go into BeOS Preferences, open "Sounds," and turn off any BeShare sounds by changing them to "none."

For information about available commands in BeShare, type /help into the chat line and hit Enter.
