How to Record Your Voicetracks

Recording a voicetrack is a simple five-step process. Once you've done it a couple of times, it becomes second nature — you'll be voicetracking an entire show in minutes.

Step 1: Select a Voicetrack Slot

  1. 1
In the right panel, click a date to load that day's program log.
  2. 2
Click an hour to display its contents — songs, promos, and voicetrack slots.
  3. 3
Voicetrack slots appear as green boxes in the log. They may include a producer note with guidance on what to say. Click a green box to load it into the recording deck.

When you click a VT slot, the deck (upper left) loads the outgoing song (Song A) and incoming song (Song B) with their waveforms. They start positioned meeting in the middle — Song A's tail on the left, Song B's intro on the right.

Step 2: Position the Songs

Before recording, you can drag the song waveforms to control the transition:

See Positioning Songs for more detail.

Step 3: Preview

Before committing to a take, preview how the transition sounds:

  1. 1
Click anywhere in the waveform area to place the playhead.
  2. 2
Press Space to start playback from the playhead position. You'll hear Song A's tail, silence in the gap (where your voice will go), and Song B's intro.
  3. 3
    Press Space again to stop.

Step 4: Record

This is where the magic happens:

  1. 1
Press Space to start the preview playing. Listen to Song A's tail to get your bearings.
  2. 2
When you're ready to talk, press R to begin recording. The status bar turns red and the VT track border goes solid. The mic is now live — your voice is being captured.
  3. 3
Talk naturally over the transition. You'll hear Song A ending, then silence (or Song B starting, depending on your positioning), giving you a feel for the real on-air moment.
  4. 4
When Song B's intro is playing and you're done talking, press M to drop a marker. This tells AutoCast exactly where your voice ends and Song B takes over. The marker is optional but gives you precise control.
  5. 5
Press Space to stop recording. Everything stops — songs, mic, the works.
💡

Don't worry about pressing R at the perfect moment. The recording captures everything from the instant you press R. You can start recording early (during Song A) and let the natural transition happen around your voice.

Step 5: Review and Save

  1. 1
Press Space to play back your take. You'll hear Song A, your voicetrack, and Song B together — exactly as it will sound on the air.
  2. 2
Happy with it? Press (Down Arrow) to save the voicetrack to Dropbox and automatically advance to the next VT slot.
  3. 3
Not happy? Press Esc to discard the take and try again.
💡

You can re-record as many times as you like. Each time you press Esc, the slate is wiped clean. Only saves the file to Dropbox.

The Quick Version

Once you're comfortable, the whole flow is five keystrokes:

KeyAction
SpaceStart preview (hear the songs)
RBegin recording (mic goes live)
MMark where your voice ends (optional)
SpaceStop everything
Save and advance to the next slot

Repeat for each voicetrack slot. A full hour of voicetracks typically takes five to ten minutes.
