A popular tech reviewer spent his own money testing budget and high-end machines from both platforms across 12 categories. The results were lopsided. Here's what he found — and why it matters if you're running a radio station.

Windows is the gaming platform, and not subtly. The RTX 5090 in the ASUS is purpose-built for it. Mac has made strides, but the sheer library of games optimized for Windows, combined with that GPU, makes this a category Windows owns decisively.
The HP OmniBook with a Snapdragon X chip ran for 8 hours and 8 minutes, outlasting every other laptop in the test including the MacBook Neo. If a budget Windows machine pairs a large battery with an efficient mobile chip, it now genuinely matches — and can beat — the Mac on longevity.
The MacBook Neo is machined from a single block of aluminum. The HP OmniBook is mostly plastic. You can press on its body and watch it flex. The hinge wobbles visibly. On the MacBook Neo, the reviewer says he "can't get a squeak out of it." Even at the $4,500 level, the ASUS — despite military-grade certification claims — still has plastic on the underside and a hinge with more wobble than the MacBook Pro, which stays exactly where you open it with zero drift. Mac wins decisively at both price points.
Geekbench 6 CPU scores, which simulate real-world workloads like background blur in video calls and photo library management, showed the MacBook Pro scoring 53% higher in single-core performance than the high-end Windows machine. The budget MacBook Neo scored 70% higher than the HP OmniBook — with half the RAM. Boot times and multitasking tests showed similar patterns. The M-series chips are simply in a different class for everyday computing tasks.
The RTX 5090 in the ASUS is a power hog even when it's sitting idle. Battery life: 4 hours 16 minutes. The MacBook Pro lasted 5 hours 20 minutes while also rendering video significantly faster. The same GPU that makes the Windows machine great for gaming is the thing that cripples it when you're trying to get through a work day.
The budget HP webcam struggled with basic exposure control and the audio was harsh and over-processed. The MacBook Neo kept faces properly exposed and sounded natural. At the top end, the MacBook Pro's studio microphones added warmth and clarity that the ASUS couldn't match on video, even though the ASUS microphone itself sounded good. Mac wins call quality at both price points.
The MacBook Neo lacks keyboard backlighting — a real omission, and the reviewer acknowledges it directly. But he says he'd still prefer it to the HP's mushy keys. The Mac trackpad was described as "a million miles better" than the HP's: smoother, more precise, and clickable anywhere on the surface rather than just the bottom edge. The MacBook Pro fixes the backlighting gap and has, in the reviewer's words, the best trackpad currently on any laptop at any price. Even the ASUS's large, feature-rich trackpad couldn't match it for responsiveness, precision, and palm rejection.
Windows is more versatile — the reviewer is clear about that. More software compatibility, more peripheral support, more customization options, AI features like Copilot's automatic meeting summaries and Recall's searchable history of everything you've done. If specialist Windows-only software is part of your workflow, that's a real constraint that doesn't disappear.
But the everyday experience on Mac is smoother. The reviewer couldn't find a single animation on the $600 MacBook Neo dropping below 60 fps. The $4,500 ASUS still had moments of random lag on simple tasks. And during filming, the ASUS simply stopped registering left clicks entirely. This isn't unusual — Windows is a layer cake of Microsoft's OS, the manufacturer's additions, and separate drivers for AMD processors, Nvidia GPUs, and every other component. Each layer is another surface for things to go wrong. Apple controls the entire stack from chip to software, which is exactly why things tend to just work.
Mac won this one too. The MacBook Neo — the cheap one — came through a drop with a bent hinge but a completely intact screen and fully working internals. The budget HP was dead on impact, display shattered. Both premium machines cracked their screens. The MacBook Neo was the only laptop still functional after a drop, earning the only point in the durability category.
