Learn to "Right-Click and Drag"
One of the really handy things you can do in BeOS, something Windows later adopted as well, is the ability to right-click and drag an object in order to copy it, move it, or create a link to it.
The procedure is worth taking a couple minutes to get-used-to. Try this:
- Open a folder containing some files.
- In a single sweeping motion, right-click and drag a file's icon from the folder to the desktop, and release. If you do it quickly and all in one motion, a little options menu will appear when you release the mouse button. It will let you choose whether you want to copy the file, move it, or create a link to it.
If, when you try this technique, you get an options menu before you ever have a chance to drag the icon, you're taking too long to move the mouse. Do the right-click and drag all in one sweeping motion. After a couple tries, you'll get the hang of it.
You'll find this technique can be a real time-saver. It can be used whether you're moving/copying/linking files from a folder to the desktop, the desktop to a folder, or from one folder to another.
